The process isn't boosting the clock speed as expected, what's incorrect?
I constructed a new PC last week and wanted to run Flight Simulator X at high settings. The game is very CPU-intensive, so I opted for a top-tier CPU that could be overclocked. Here are the specifications:
MoBo: Asus Z170 Pro Gaming
CPU: Intel Core i7 7700k
GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 1060 GAMING X 3G
RAM: HyperX Fury 16 GB DDR4-2666 2 x 8 GB
SSD: Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500 GB
The CPU is liquid cooled with a Corsair H55, and the case includes six additional fans, excluding the GPU and power supply fans.
I set all FSX settings to their maximum and simulated a worst-case scenario—achieving only 10-15 FPS.
Then I raised the clock speed from 4.2 GHz to 4.9 GHz and recreated the same in-game conditions, but the performance remained unchanged.
According to RealTemp, my CPU is running at 4.9 GHz, while CPU-Z indicates it hasn’t surpassed 4.2 GHz during stress tests using Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (which claims a max of 4.2 GHz).
To further boost performance, I updated the BIOS with several overclocking tweaks:
- Ai Overclock Tuner → XMP
- CPU Core Ratio → Sync All Cores
- Core Ratio Limit → 49
- DIGI+ VRM > CPU Load-line Calibration → Level 5
- CPU Core/Cache Current Limit → max
- CPU Core/Cache Voltage → Manual Mode
- CPU Core Voltage Override → 1.300
And I turned off CPU Turbo Mode.
I also set Windows power options to High Performance.
I’m reaching out to a forum member for assistance, as this is my first overclocking attempt and my first PC build.
Appreciate any help!
It seems I should have kept the turbo mode active. After restarting it, all programs now run at 4.9 GHz, but I'm still not seeing any improvement in FPS. It might be that my GPU's memory is the issue. Using OC mode through the MSI Gaming App hasn't helped either.
