I own an 8-pin cable for both my PCI-E graphics card and CPU, while my PSU features 5 and 8-pin ports labeled "CPU & PCI-E". The manual wasn't helpful, especially for the NZXT C850 model.

It doesn't matter which cable you use. Either one fits into the 8-pin slots labeled "CPU & PCIe" on that power supply model.
