The PC starts up only after resetting the CMOS memory – it fails to power on under any other conditions.
Hey everyone,
I'm facing a peculiar problem with my desktop PC. Whenever I power it off completely, it won’t restart unless I clear the CMOS using the jumper. If I press the power button without clearing the BIOS, nothing happens—no fans, no lights, it’s fully dead. After clearing the CMOS and trying to turn it back on, everything functions perfectly: it POSTs, boots into Windows smoothly, and I can handle gaming, editing, and heavy tasks without any trouble. It runs stably while active. But when I shut it down, the cycle repeats—clearing the CMOS is necessary to get it to boot again.
What I’ve tried so far:
- Replacing the CMOS battery
- Checking all power cables and connections
- Resetting BIOS settings to defaults
- Updating BIOS to the latest version

Any suggestions on what might be wrong? Is my motherboard failing? I’d really appreciate your advice or recommendations.
Thanks in advance!

For clarity, please mention the BIOS version of your motherboard at this moment.
When I turn on the power without resetting the BIOS, nothing occurs—no fans, no indicators, fully inactive.
If you need to physically interact with the system before it shows any response, it may suggest a grounding problem. Do you experience a slight tingling when touching the metal part of your case while your feet are on a tiled floor?
Moved thread from Motherboards to Systems.
I don't notice any indication of grounding.
The latest BIOS version is F4a (current update).
