The PC shuts down during gaming despite being linked to a UPS?
I have a UPS rated at 650VA /390W. When power cuts out while gaming, the PC shuts off and the UPS keeps beeping continuously, indicating a fault according to the manual. This doesn’t occur when the PC is idle; it keeps running normally.
My PC specifications are: Ryzen 5 3600, GTX 1050ti, Thermaltake Smart BM2 650W PSU, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB SSD, and 500GB HDD. Since I’m using a budget PC that doesn’t need much power, I thought the UPS could handle it. The UPS is new and I’ve used it for about three weeks. What could be the problem here?
Do I really need a UPS with 650W capacity?
I understand I should have done more research before purchasing the UPS. Please help me out… thanks.
Yes, a UPS should be able to supply more power than the PC consumes. Even though the PSU has a 650W output, this isn't consistent—it changes depending on the load. When idle it might only provide around 150W (in your situation), but during heavy use like gaming it could exceed 380W. A stronger UPS would allow you to smoothly power down windows and resume games without interruption, or enter hibernate mode so everything resumes correctly once power is restored.
