I attempted to power on my PC but couldn't activate it. I checked the power cord and noticed some sparking near it. I suspect a power supply issue due to possible dust interference. I cleaned inside the case and the vent, hoping to resolve the problem.
Earlier, my PC briefly turned on before shutting off randomly. It has also stopped on its own a few times recently. I'm unsure where the fault lies when it won't even start. Should I replace the power supply, or is there a simpler way to diagnose the issue? Could a faulty fan be preventing the system from turning on? I used to have fan-related problems, especially in winter, but that hasn't happened this year.
Regarding the SSD, it's located under the GPU and I haven't backed up data in months. I'm worried about potential damage if the PSU fails.
I would modify the power cable first, as some are quite inexpensive and have poor connection pressure.
I also used the power cable from my monitor, which matches the voltage and has higher amperage. It still didn't work.
Look closely at contacts on the PSU, discoloration and/or specks from sparking. I have seen a lot of that. I have also seen some really dusty inside but for some extra heat it was not a problem.
How old is it ? It's possible some capacitor is leaking and that could pose big problem. PSU is very important component and could burn other parts.
I don't see any clear sparks on the prongs, aside from a small brown spot. I captured some images of the inside of the power supply (without opening it), and the capacitors appear slightly swollen, though I'm uncertain if this is normal or not. The PC is six years old.
If you notice those electrolytic capacitors with the X etched at the top, it means they should be flat. This design helps reduce their strength; if they begin to bulge, it could signal they are deteriorating.

Six years is quite a long period for that type of PSU, and the factory warranty typically covers five years.
Don't invest in a so-called "PSU Tester" unless you apply representative loads across all main power lines. Otherwise, it merely shows DC voltages without revealing AC ripple issues. If your capacitors are leaking, the ripple voltage might surpass the safe limits for your motherboard. This could lead to failure of your motherboard, CPU, or GPU.
If any electrolytic components show signs of bulging (like the one in the photo), discard the PSU immediately. The capacitor in the middle has burst, releasing a brown substance that could damage nearby parts. Avoid letting your old PSU reach this point—replace it with a new one.
