I assembled this system at the end of 2022 – an Asus Prime B650 board, Ryzen 7 7700X chipset, 32GB DDR5 RAM, Corsair Vengeance memory, and a 7900XT graphics card. For the most part, everything works as expected, but Windows keeps having trouble. Here’s what I’ve experienced: while watching a YouTube video, it freezes and won’t update properly. I can still pause, exit full screen, and hear sound, but the video itself stalls. This isn’t limited to YouTube; even games behave oddly. Pressing the Windows key opens the Start menu, but when I try to restart, several programs close abruptly as if the system is about to reboot. Restarting repeatedly or shutting it down doesn’t seem to help. The only way to recover is to hold the power button or wait a few minutes for a forced reset. This issue keeps happening daily. When I return home, I turn on the PC and get a crash warning from Wallpaper Engine. I’ve updated the BIOS multiple times, tried various fixes – checking RAM with software, flashing the BIOS, reinstalling drivers – but nothing resolves it. I ran Windows Media Player without the built-in graphics for a few days to rule out display problems, then moved the monitor to the GPU and it crashed within minutes. It seems like a VRAM or RAM problem. I’m saving enough money to replace the motherboard eventually, but I need advice on how to fix this without losing my progress.

I'm unsure if the issue is due to the motherboard or GPU since the display linked to the dGPU failed Windows Media Player. Do you have an additional PCIe x16 port on your motherboard, such as the "Asus PRIME B650-PLUS AMD B650 ATX Motherboard"? If not, do you own a backup dGPU?

I have an older NVIDIA graphics card I can use, plus an extra full PCIe slot on the board. I plan to install this when I’m off work and share the update tomorrow.

Consider using both approaches. You're welcome!

I ended up without another decent PCIe slot because the only one left was too close to the board. I swapped my card to an older GTX960, and after four power cycles and letting it heat up and cool down normally, I haven’t seen any crashes during stress testing with Windows Media Player over the next few hours. If it doesn’t crash, I’ll reach out to AMD to ask if they can swap cards with me.

It took a while, but I finally had to replace the motherboard. I'm saving up and hope it solves the issue.
