Hey everyone, while using FarCry 6 recently my PC shut down unexpectedly. It wouldn’t start at all. I went through all the troubleshooting but nothing helped. After turning on the power supply, whether I press the case power button or not, the RGB lights on the RAM stay off after about ten seconds. There are no fans, no Debug LEDs when I press power, and once I remove the GPU, the RAM lights don’t turn on automatically. Then fans come back on, Debug LEDs flash, but stop at VGA—since there’s no GPU and the CPU isn’t using it. I think the PSU might be the issue, because the Mobo debug LEDs would light up if it weren’t getting power. But since the laptop is off, that doesn’t seem likely. I don’t have a spare GPU or CPU to test. A friend recently bought a portable gaming laptop for convenience. It has the same specs: Ryzen 7 5800X, Aorus X570 Pro WiFi, Gigabyte GTX 1080Ti, and so on. I’m using the latest BIOS, cleared CMOS, and re-seated the RAM. TIA
Kind of sounds like motherboard or RAM. Mobo will do nothing without power, and there isn't a debug light for a PSU issue. But a flaky PSU could be a culprit also. Bad / flaky capacitors, to be specific. Here's a tutorial on jumping for testing (will need volt meter, be sure to ground an appropriate ground wire in the respective connector when testing individual pins).
Maybe it should, but shouldn't it try to boot at least? A fresh 850W PSU might be able to start Windows, though the board seems completely unresponsive once the GPU is in place. I can’t press the power button—it doesn’t react. If I unplug the GPU or its power cable, the board powers on and fans spin, but the debug LEDs still work. Unfortunately, there’s no BIOS switch, yet the board remains dead with the GPU connected or the power cable attached.
I lean more toward a power distribution problem, though you should try it with a different GPU. That's why I got a used GT710 for just $20!
The example provided highlights that new solutions offer no real advantage. A PSU with poor or insufficient capacitors struggles to supply current during startup surges, similar to starting a car with a weak battery. Used a friend's spare components to install a backup GPU (710). The system started working with Windows. Tried the older 1080Ti with a different PSU, but it didn’t boot at all. Checked the GPU power cables for continuity and found perfect connection. It looks like there’s a short circuit. Could you try fixing it?
