I bought a motherboard from Amazon claiming Ryzen 3rd gen support, but it came with packaging stating 'AMD Ryzen 2000 Desktop Ready.' I’m wondering if my Ryzen 3600 will work with the one I received. Thanks!
It works with an upgrade to the BIOS. Just make sure the MSI package has a "max" label for r3000 compatibility, or test if the PC starts up correctly.
The motherboard is compatible with all three Ryzen generations. It doesn't necessarily rely on the pre-installed BIOS; an updated version might be needed before using a third-gen chip. Ryzen 3 models were released in June, so if the board was made around July or later, it likely includes a suitable BIOS. You can find details on the Downloads page: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/B450M-PRO-M2. Bios version 28 from July 2019 adds support for the latest series. If the board was made in July or later, it probably comes with that BIOS (or newer) already installed. The availability can vary by distributor or import source.
MAX is exclusive to MSI, but it should have been a MAX model in their situation. I hope all motherboard makers adopted that branding. The simplest option is to return it and receive the board; it’s roughly the same cost (cheaper even) and offers better VRM, while also being compatible with Ryzen 3000. You should also check the listing for the motherboard’s box—look for the red and silver, or orange and silver "Ryzen 3000 Ready" logo, not the black and silver "Ryzen 2000 Ready" ones. If you’ve already opened it, the worst chance is getting a low-end 200GE or R3 1200, updating BIOS yourself, and then selling the cheaper model. I’d prefer a refund if that’s possible. It won’t work with your 3600.
It won't work, Amazon generally won't allow returns unless the box remains unopened. He should just send it back and receive a MAX board. If opened, he'll need to locate a 200ge/1200 or find someone who can update the BIOS, which would be a big hassle compared to returning and ordering a new board. Probably faster shipping with the new one.
