I chose to refresh my old setup—probably a 2010 iMac with two Thunderbolts, some USBs, and an SD card reader. I attempted to boot into recovery to access disk utilities, but I don’t have that option. When trying to erase it, I received the error “cannot open device” with code 69877. I can’t recall the old password, so I’m unsure how to proceed now.

Start in Internet Recovery mode to gain root access and get a fresh OS X copy. Restart your Mac and press Option Command R while holding it down; choose a Wi-Fi network and enter its password. Next, Internet Recovery will download the latest OS X Utilities. Pick Disk Utility, then format the disk. If you wish to reinstall OSX, return to OSX Utilities. Edited June 19, 2022 by FUIT1985
