my friend brought his ThinkPad here, and it initially showed just a black screen with a cursor. I fixed it by using the recovery terminal and removing the NVIDIA drivers. After that, we tried reinstalling them but the issue persisted. The laptop is running Kubuntu 18.04.

Which graphics card are you using? It’s improbable that a new option will outperform the specialized NVIDIA products.
The Nvidia binary kernel module might have been built incorrectly or isn’t compatible with your kernel. If your card and ThinkPad are outdated, using a proprietary driver could be unnecessary.
Custom GFX software can cause issues and be difficult to maintain on Linux lately. My older 650ti and RX480 both run Mesa drivers effectively http://www.linlap.com/lenovo_thinkpad_t520
