Hello, here are my current computer details: processor – AMD Ryzen 9 5900X; graphics card – Nvidia RTX 2070; storage – Crucial P1 3D NVMe PCIe M.2 1TB SSD; memory – Samsung 860 Evo 1TB; RAM – Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200 C16 2x8GB; motherboard – MSI B450 GAMING PRO CARBON AC (MS-7B85); power supply – Antec 620 High Current. I updated the CPU last Friday, replacing my previous Ryzen 5 3200. Since then, my system has been experiencing frequent crashes. All screens go completely black, even when the mouse works. Fans spin nonstop, and pressing the power button doesn’t shut it down or restart it for a full minute. Initially, I considered GPU issues, but the problem started right after the CPU change. I also doubted the power supply was insufficient, though I’m not entirely sure. My motherboard supports the CPU, RAM and SSDs seem fine. I suspect overheating might be the cause, so I plan to clean it up and apply more thermal paste. However, I noticed during a Unity export last time my PC froze mid-load, even after restarting with the power button pressed. After a few hours of rest, it would crash again when launching Unity. Even after a full weekend of continuous use, there were no issues. I’m not sure what to try next. I have the latest BIOS update and recent driver updates. The crashes happened even when I opened Unity right after startup, but not during streaming or multitasking. I tried it for hours without problems, so overload seems unlikely. I also checked that power supply isn’t the issue (though you’re welcome to verify). This problem hasn’t occurred before my CPU change, which makes me hope it’s something else. Tomorrow morning I’ll open it up again and add thermal paste just in case. If it improves, I’ll revert to the old CPU. I’m eager for your advice and support—I’m running out of ideas. Thank you all for your time and help. I look forward to hearing from you.
Start by downloading HWmonitor and applying a heavy workload. Monitor the CPU temperatures to detect any overheating issues. I’ve noted that the B450 motherboard might struggle with the 5900X’s power draw, so keep an eye on the VRM temperatures during testing. Also, let me know what CPU cooler you’re using.
