I purchased an i5-13600k yet performance lags significantly compared to expectations. On Cinebench R23 my scores are 10834 multi-core and 1989 single-core, far below the expected 23984 multicore and 38530 average. Passmark v10.2 shows a CPU mark of 23089 with an average of 38530, while CPU-Z reports 4701 multicore but 9847 overall—discrepancies suggest possible issues. The maximum package temp reaches 77°C, and there’s no power limiting detected. I’ve reset Windows, adjusted BIOS settings (disabled Asus Multicore Enhancement, turned on XPM, enabled Intel Adaptive Boost), and verified HyperThreading is active. The hardware specs are clear: i5-13600k Z690 with TUF WiFi D4, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, etc. What could be causing the underperformance? Might the chip be defective, or is there another factor at play? I noticed the retail box was slightly damaged, but the CPU appeared intact.

Discover how 13th generation Intel CPUs perform on Z690 boards. Compare the Core i7-13700K with the Asus TUG Z690 and note the performance differences, especially in speed.

Maybe switching to a Z790 board could resolve the problem.

They're Z790 boards, but other options like Z690 work just as well and can help you cut costs significantly compared to Asus Z790 models.

I began by reading a Reddit thread I discovered.
Next, I visited the support page for my motherboard to get driver and BIOS updates, choosing Windows 64 bit.
Then I opened the drivers & tools area, expanded the chipset section, and downloaded the specified files: Intel Management Engine Interface, Intel ME Version 2229.3.2.0, and the update tool for Intel ME 16.1.25.1885.
After saving everything, I located the first file, extracted it, and used the setup wizard.
I repeated the process for the second Intel ME version, downloading and installing the updates.
Now performance is working smoothly.
