My machine has shown sudden lock-ups while playing games, and occasionally it restarts on its own. This issue started after I assembled the computer in November of last year. It keeps happening at the same pace. When gaming, the OS freezes and I have to manually turn it off by pressing the power button. The game becomes unresponsive, almost as if it captured a moment, without any black or blue screens. There are no error alerts during this process, and no audio is audible inside the game. I've left the computer idle for a while to check if it resolves itself, but it doesn't.

CPU details:
- Intel® Core™ i7-6700K CPU @4.00GHz (8 CPUs), ~4.0GHz
Motherboard:
- Part# 90MB0M90-M0AAY0
- ASUS Max VIII Hero Motherboard ATX Z170 LGA1151 64GB
RAM:
- Model# CMK16GX4M4A2400C14R
- CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB (4 x 4GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2400 (PC4 19200)
Memory kit for DDR4 Systems.
CPU cooler:
- CRYORIG R1 Ultimate Dual Tower Heatsink for AMD/Intel CPU - Black
Video Card:
- MSI GeForce GTX 980 Ti DirectX 12 GTX 980TI GAMING 6G 6GB 384-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 SLI Support ATX Video Card
Power Supply (model number, or company and wattage at least):
- E.V.G.A. Supernova 850 G2
- 850 watts Gold
Hard drive(s):
1. Seagate Desktop HDD ST1000DM003 1TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive
2. Crucial BX100 2.5" 250GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
3. CT250BX100SSD1
Case:
- Rosewill WolfAlloy ATX Mid Tower Gaming Computer Case, supports VGA card length up to 340mm, includes four fans – two front 120mm, one rear 120mm, and one top 140mm.
USB keyboard & mouse:
- Logitech Wireless Combo MK270 920-004536 Black USB 2.0 RF
Keyboard & Mouse
- Wireless mouse and keyboard use only one USB receiver connected to the computer's USB port.
- The mouse and keyboard do not require additional fans.
Trackball:
- Logitech M570 wireless trackball
Fans:
- I own four case fans; their settings allow speed adjustment, but mine are fixed at high. No changes made yet.
Troubleshooting steps taken:
1. Removed Nvidia drivers via Add/Remove Programs and reinstalled through Nvidia GeForce Experience.
2. Ran "Heaven Benchmark 4.0" – temperatures stayed between 53°C and 69°C on Ultra mode.
3. Used "Intel Extreme Tuning Utility" for a CPU stress test lasting an hour.
4. Performed Memtest86 with four passes.
5. Replaced RAM; system remained stable during tests.
No crashes or freezes were observed during the stress tests. Thank you for assisting in resolving this issue.

I would modify the BIOS settings.
Using ASUS suite might cause freezing or damage. If it freezes, turning it off could help, though it might still brick it. Even if it becomes bricked, resetting the BIOS is straightforward.
If needed, I would return to the BIOS and adjust the configurations, as newer firmware often restores settings automatically after flashing.

Upgrade the BIOS for the device with the CPU issue, which may cause freezing when under stress

I didn't mention updating the BIOS to version 1402 during troubleshooting. I'm sorry for missing that step. When I updated via the ASUS suite, after restarting it appeared a message asking to enter setup to recover BIOS settings. It reminded me to set SATA configuration to raid mode and press f1 to proceed. Not understanding what was being asked, I left the setup and resumed normal operation. Once the system started normally, the BIOS update to version 1402 was confirmed.

I updated the bios via the bios menu, enabled "load optimized defaults," saved the changes, and exited. Then I'll test the games to check if the issue is resolved.

It seems the system crashed once more. Fortunately, it was a BSoD with an error. We can begin from there now. The error message reads: "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA"

I checked every RAM separately and saw no problems. After reinstalling Windows 10 with all the necessary drivers, the system still crashes. I plan to reinstall the RAM quickly and then run hwinfo after launching Witcher 3. I didn’t use GPU temperature monitoring before, so it’s possible overheating the GPU could be causing these issues.
