It seems there might already be an updated firmware installed. Regardless, the device can only operate at 5GHz.

Confirmed. The current version of airOS v6.30 is the most recent firmware for the NSM5. While others might attempt to operate these devices as standalone APs, their use is mainly intended for wireless bridging between two NSM5 units.
