I attempted a gentle overclock on my 3930K i7 to 4 ghz using the OC settings from my MSI board (Msi X79A-GD45 (8D)). I entered OC Genie mode, adjusted the strap clock from auto/1.0 to 1.25, but I couldn't modify the MHz setting. After several reboots, it would shut down mid-boot. I'm using an aircooler similar to a Hyer 212 evo. Any suggestions?

I wouldn't use it, but if you're interested in trying, look at this article.

I checked both before attempting this. Neither includes an OC genie.

I would let go of that genie, because the most effective method for achieving a stable overclock is by adjusting the BIOS settings. Those OC apps haven't worked well for me... and if they were a genie, your system wouldn't have stopped functioning when using it.
