I experienced unexpected reboot problems on a custom build I created for my sister. After several fixes—like replacing the power supply and adjusting settings—I found the issue stemmed from the Precision Boost Overdrive being enabled by default. Once I disabled it and set the CPU clock cap to 3.4GHz with a 34 ratio in BIOS, the system stabilized. It seems enabling this feature might void your warranty, which could explain why MSI canceled it for the processor. The board arrived new but had sticky residue inside; reverting BIOS settings shouldn't change the PBO setting. I plan to reach out to MSI to confirm the default PBO configuration should have been applied at purchase.
It doesn't cancel your warranty. Actually, I think it might now because you acknowledged it. The solution is: just don’t ask, just don’t say. AMD can’t tell if you boosted your CPU unless you do something extreme like double the voltage. It’s not a major issue. Don’t stress about it—manual overclocking should be fine. PBO usually works well, but if it fails, a solid manual tweak will help. It’s simpler than it used to be.
You’ve received an invoice from Newegg confirming they shipped a new board. Keep it safe. If issues arise, Microsoft must honor that warranty. Then, consider letting it go. A 1.5v surge over time is safe. Your CPU and motherboard are fine. Spending hours on the phone replacing parts isn’t necessary if you didn’t open the box. That was your error. Now you have a functional CPU and board—why not enjoy gaming?
If voltage control is active, 1.5v works. When you need lower voltage, use AGESA 1207 to drop it to about 1.425v. This reduces the boost capability significantly. The 1.5v setting suits single-core boosts. If you manage the cooling, the CPU can reach around 5150 when properly tuned.
It's possible I'm mistaken, but I'm confident AMD confirmed PBO doesn't cancel the warranty.
