She needs a new HDD soon because the current drive is struggling with read errors and SMART warnings. I’m far away, so I can’t install an SSD myself. I’m curious if anyone knows how to pre-install Windows 10 on the existing drive—maybe by booting it at startup or using a setup trick. It might help to power off the computer during the first reboot so the system is ready for installation. Or should I ask someone nearby to handle the upgrade?

You can install the new SSD into your system and run Windows on it. However, this isn't the best approach since you'll need drivers specific to your own PC for that SSD. If your brother-in-law is reasonably skilled with Windows installations, use him for the setup and follow the instructions carefully. Once he's done, you could pass the steps on to your mother. Assuming she can install the SSD, she should be able to complete the process in just a few clicks and key presses.

You might forward the message to her, ask her to contact tech support, and have them manage her device so you don’t have to do anything yourself. It’s a free option.
