Over the past year, I assembled a setup with these components:
- Intel Core i5-11400 processor;
- MSI B560M-A PRO motherboard;
- 24GB Crucial RAM at 2400MHz, later upgraded to 64GB DDR4 2666MHz Corsair Vengeance LPX;
- 500GB Kingston Fury Renegade M.2 PCIe Gen4x4 SSD;
- AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB GDDR6 graphics card;
- Corsair CS850M 850W semi-modular power supply (reused from earlier).

From the start, I observed odd behavior from the motherboard, even though it was brand new. It would sometimes refuse to boot until everything was properly seated. When I turned on the UEFI and enabled the ERP ready power option, it would take 3–5 seconds to power up, occasionally longer. I never activated that setting again.

The most unusual issue began after swapping the RAM for the Vengeance LPX 64GB module. Initially, only one stick was recognized; I had to rearrange them. Once the 64GB was installed, everything worked smoothly, including XMP profile activation. However, the motherboard still took longer to POST with the new RAM.

A critical moment came last month when I powered down the display and tried another task. Upon returning, the GPU fans were blasting and there was no video output. After a hard restart, the motherboard reset the RAM speed from 2666MHz to 2133MHz. I attempted XMP again twice, but each time it reset the speed back down and displayed a warning about instability. Eventually, after three tries, it functioned correctly.

I also experienced display issues on Linux reboots—pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del resolved the problem. No major crashes or errors occurred until March 8th. I watched a YouTube video, and the browser tab crashed, saying “Your tab just crashed.” That was the first clear sign something was wrong.

Eventually, the PC became unresponsive. The display would freeze, emit loud static, and play broken video loops. After restarting, it would enter a boot loop between the CPU debug LED and DRAM LED. Eventually, it stopped responding entirely. The motherboard stuck in a loop, alternating between red and orange LEDs, until it gave up and stayed on the solid orange DRAM indicator.

After nearly a year, my new general-purpose and workstation PC is no longer functioning. Should I try to repair it, or should I upgrade to a newer platform (like AM5 or LGA 1700 with DDR5) and a better PSU? I might even think about switching to a prebuilt system such as the Dell XPS 8960 or the Precision 3660, given their reliability and quality.

It might be worth considering a new board, though I’m also wary of the PSU—it could be influencing the problem or making it worse. I remember you mentioned the PSU was part of an earlier build; I don’t know how long ago, but its age might give us clues. The current unit has the right wattage for your system, so a similar rating should work. Upgrading isn’t necessarily bad, but compare the costs of a new setup versus repairing what you have and assess whether fixing it is worth the risk of it not working again. If the existing build meets your needs, I’d explore boards and PSUs first. Others might offer useful tips to guide the decision. Good luck!
