Hi all,
I just completed my new build and it didn’t turn on at first. It seems the CPU power cables were connected to the wrong location, so I fixed it on the power supply. But I forgot to reconnect them to the motherboard. When I tried to start the computer by jamming it with a screwdriver, it briefly turned on for about half a second, then there was a pop and some smoke came from the CPU power cables area. Was my CPU damaged? Right now I can only see the RAM lighting up. Would anyone help me figure this out?
I shared this on Reddit and two different users suggested the motherboard might be dead. Any other ideas would be appreciated!

Yes, I realized I missed connecting both the 8-pin and 4-pin cables to the motherboard when it happened, and some smoke came out. The 24-pin cable was already in, while the 8-pin and 4-pin ones were connected to the power supply at that moment.
Did anything ever show up on the screen? How long did you let the system stay on before shutting it down if nothing appeared? AM5 systems might need a few minutes after initialization, during training and setup.
I shared this thread because of the pop and then smoke, not because it wasn’t posting or showing anything on the screen. Nothing appeared before I unplugged it, and nothing occurred afterward. I created this thread to check if anyone more experienced knew whether I damaged the motherboard or CPU, not that the PC was still booting. My main worry is the pop and smoke, not whether it was working.
