The motherboard is making noise.
I recently replaced my components and after they stabilized, I started hearing a bothersome high-pitched buzzing sound from the top left side of my motherboard. Both of my boards were making this noise, and it gets louder under stress, especially near my PC. It’s driving me crazy. Do you think this is normal or should I take action?
It seems CoilWhine might be experiencing a similar issue. It’s not dangerous, but it can be really bothersome if it gets loud. Look at this discussion—same motherboard, identical sound. Someone reported problems with 4 B650 ROG STRIX boards.
You can search online for X670 / ROG X670 Coilwhine solutions, but Coilwhine tends to persist. Possibly PBO, reducing voltage, and applying power limits might help. The noise intensifies when stressing the CPU because the coils vibrate more with higher power. Coilwhine is often noticed in GPUs, where pitch rises with greater load or FPS. That said, I've assembled over 50 AM5 systems in 2023 without any issues, only using B650 boards such as ASUS TUF B650 WIFI, Gigabyte Aourus B650 Elite AX, and MSI TOMAHAWK B650 WIFI. The ROG STRIX line seems more prone to coilwhine than others. My TUF B650 runs quietly, showing the CPU at 45w less while maintaining performance. Give it a try, adjust settings, and see if it works.
It's much quieter on one of the boards now. I changed them out and probably returned the other one. What are your chances of getting a clean sound without any coil whine if you replace it? Also, my PC is right next to me, and I have open-back headphones so I can hear it clearly, though it's still a bit loud on the board.
