The motherboard can display a larger GPU, but it will show a smaller one instead.
I'm working on setting up a PC for a friend and running into some challenges. The motherboard is an Asus M5A97 R2.0. I have two powerful GPUs: one is an Asus R9270 with 2x DDR5, and the other is a Radeon Sapphire HD5770 with 1x DDR5. Both are six-pin PCIe powered. The power supply provides 620 watts. When both GPUs are installed, the motherboard fails to turn on. I have a smaller GPU that gets powered differently—this one is a Core i7 R5 220 with 2x DDR3—and it works fine. I've tried connecting it directly to the PCIe slot and using the other GPU through its six-pin connector to test if the PSU was the issue, but it still worked. I updated the BIOS to the latest version, but the problem persists. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Occasionally it occurs. Infrequently on Asus boards, yet we don't know. The cards require power from the PSU, the motherboard, and this one might not supply enough for your larger card.
Thought like that is that the pcie slot doesn't provide all the power needed buy those two gpu even tho they are plugged they still need the pcie power and if they want let's say 75W and that the slot can only provide 50W that might be the problem. Just throwing idea there tho. Maybe you could find the mount of power the slot can provide on that board and see if that idea is on the right track or just bogus.
