I had identical ideas and looked up more information. I didn’t read those remarks at the end lol.
Not sure if sarcasm, so I'll treat it like it's the most serious statement ever. Not even close. It was one of the better games in a very specific period, yes. But it was never anything more than that. I don't understand this obsession with retro games. It seems like some people call them the greatest games of all time to make themselves feel special, or they have a really big nostalgia problem. The facts don't support these claims. Gameplay, UI, graphics, story, content, level design, sound, music etc. is all better in modern games. Take a look at Borderlands for example. Despite all of the faults, Borderlands games are dozens of times better than any of the Duke Nukem games. It's not sacrilege to say that. Nostalgia and desire to be a special snowflake won't change that.
I understand your perspective. Comparing old games to modern ones based on UI, graphics, and sound can be challenging. Sure, the newer titles are technically advanced, but it's important to consider the bigger picture. You can definitely feel nostalgia, yet some games were simply crafted well and enjoyable. It’s similar to comparing movies.
I don't agree with the claim that it's one of the top franchises. There was only a single truly exceptional title in the series, Duke Nukem 3d. Regarding modern games, I don't see them as superior. They often prioritize simplicity and shallow mechanics, making higher difficulty less impactful. Many new titles rely heavily on controller limitations, which can hinder skill development. Console ports for shooters are frequently disappointing. Combat is tailored to the constraints of controllers, with sprinting and ads enabling fast movement during fights while slowing it down in combat to aid aiming. Randomized layouts reduce aim precision, and radar minimizes the effort needed to turn sharply. At close distance, opponents can quickly shift positions, making precise aiming less crucial. These factors highlight how modern design choices often prioritize convenience over true improvement.
Multiplayer experiences are shaped by console player concerns. Many avoid challenging matches, relying on matchmaking to balance performance. In contrast, earlier games allowed genuine growth through consistent challenges. Health recovery is essential for comfort and strategy in multiplayer. Unlike PC shooters, console titles don't require extensive regen to stay competitive. The absence of strong PC alternatives isn't due to low interest but reflects ongoing development trends.
Studios like Cliffy B and Bosskey exemplify this issue. They're focusing on PC exclusives with features that reduce accuracy, such as iron sights, while ignoring the needs of console users. Their approach reinforces a controller-centric mindset, leaving little room for broader appeal or innovation.
What keeps this brand apart from Randy and Gearbox is its refusal to be ordinary. The latest releases feel like they’re just another generic product, compared to something like Half Life: Opposing Force or the recent Borderlands DLC—just repetitive content meant for casual play.
