Despite what most people say online, I suspect my second ThinkPad was likely destroyed by a damaged stick of used DDR3 RAM. It might have been the RAM that caused problems with the OS installation or even the CPU/GPU itself. I’m wondering if this was just a GPU-related issue. On the first model (T430), I kept trying to run the RAM for nearly a week until it crashed and wouldn’t boot outside of the dock. It also showed similar graphical glitches afterward. After swapping out both the CPU and motherboard on that unit, I tried the used RAM again but only ran memtest86—it still wouldn’t boot properly, and when it did, I wasn’t quick enough to select the correct option in grub. What might have failed here? Could it be something as simple as EEPROM corruption? It’s frustrating because I often spend a lot on upgrades only to lose them this way. Plus, if someone wants to cover shipping costs, they offered 16 gigabytes of free DDR3L RAM—though that seems a bit too generous!

I noticed the laptop wouldn't start unless it was connected to the dock. This suggests an issue with the ribbon header or screen cable. Checking the boot-up video shows a broken signal. However, I can't confirm if your memory is functioning properly. Edit: If your L430 has integrated graphics, that could explain the problem since the memory might be shared with the GPU. Try using new cables.

The cable was brand new for the t430 after I installed an FHD display. I tested it with both brand new RAM and components I removed from other computers. Since both use integrated graphics, I’m wondering if I might have damaged the CPU or the motherboard. The boot issues were frequent—every third time it would start on the dock but never without a problem. It powers up normally just before the BIOS splash screen appears, then turns off and keeps showing the ThinkLight every time.
