I've gotten numerous scam emails before, but never with my password attached. They even managed to request a password change on an account of mine. I've been changing passwords and enabling double factor authentication, something I know I should have had before this. I'm also working on getting the compromised email deleted. What I need to know if there's any truth to there being a driver based virus (whatever that is) on my PC. I've ran a virus scanner, and I do have a firewall enabled. Can they access my computer with just an old email? Is there anything else I should do to shore up my security? Thanks so much for any advise.
The password involved in the incident was exposed in a data breach. These are fraudulent attempts, and you weren’t targeted. Your email might have been included in another breach. I encounter these often—they’re just tactics to pressure people into giving money.
That's just misleading information designed to trick people. This scheme has been active for a while. Your email and password likely came into the wrong hands during a data breach, which is why scammers have access to them. They exploit this data to trick victims into thinking their computer has been hacked, sending them fake emails. It's a good idea to update your passwords—don't reuse them across sites. Because that email address was exposed, you may keep receiving phishing attempts there. Stay alert for any unusual messages.
Thanks for your support! I reached out to my ISP, who informed me it might take up to 400 days for the email to be permanently removed. That seems a bit confusing, but they confirmed it’s currently turned off.
