I opened Steam, pressed start for the game, but it showed a black screen and then vanished. It seemed to reset to Steam automatically. I've uninstalled and reinstalled it before it stopped working.

Likely it's a conflict with audio drivers, usually realtek. Easiest way to fix it is to plug something into your mic jack. Anything, even headphones. Make sure something is plugged into audio jack as well.
