Hardware details: HP ProDesk 400 G3 Barracuda with 250 GB HDD, Intel i5-6600 processor, UHD graphics. Recently I upgraded my Ubuntu 20.04 system. After a required restart, I began experiencing problems. When attempting login, I entered the right credentials. However, pressing the sign-in button caused the background to shift from purple to dark grey and my mouse to freeze. After a short delay, it returned to the login screen without any warnings. Attempting again sent me back to the login page once more, identical to the initial failure. I suspect this isn’t due to incorrect credentials, as the system correctly identifies them. No other users are present, and root cannot log in from the screen (receiving errors about non-existent users). I inspected the interior but didn’t spot any indicators of trouble. Troubleshooting steps: Restarted the device, left it off overnight, and the issue remained. I transferred the HDD to another machine (OptiPlex 380) and successfully logged in. I also tried booting other OSes from a thumb drive, though they either failed to start or briefly booted before crashing. No error messages appeared; the display would go black while hardware operated normally.

It seems unusual. This appears to be an odd hardware problem.

It seems the latest release might affect driver functionality. Can you try reverting an update in Ubuntu? There appears to be a high likelihood of this issue being tied to the update itself. Additionally, a patch or hotfix could address the problem.

It turned out the integrated graphics card was the issue. A separate card resolved the problem.
