i bought an LG gram 17 at Costco because of its low price and extra warranty. that deal is gone by August this year. For weeks, the V key stopped working on my laptop. Usually, I could press it hard until it worked, but then it would stop. i popped the plastic key off, sprayed air into it, and it started moving a little before dying completely. later, i broke the hinge under the keyboard while pressing down the plunger, but nothing came out anymore. so now it's officially broken.

i called Costco and told them to send me pictures or I'll wait 24 hours for a reply. It's been two weeks since then. i emailed them again with my photos, and they said after looking at what i sent, the problem isn't a manufacturing defect on their part. They can't tell if it's just the keyboard or the motherboard from those pictures alone. So i called the support guy up again to ask why they couldn't diagnose it themselves.

He told me that since none of my photos show all four corners clearly, he can't do any more tests without seeing real pictures. He said I'd have to send in new photos. Can Costco actually test if only the motherboard or keyboard isn't working? Or maybe i should just go to a local shop to fix it instead? i'm so confused about why they're not testing anything yet.

I hit that plastic piece behind my key and ruined it, so now I'm out of warranty because this was me being careless.

You probably shouldn't have changed anything just yet. It's better to leave things alone for now, take your car (or whatever) to a place called Costco or their official service center, and let them figure out the problem. Then you'd be charged to get it fixed later. That sounds like you made some bad choices here.

how do I fix it? watching someone take a whole keyboard apart isn't super exciting. also shipping that thing back to China took three months. though if i saw the problem right away, i'd be willing to try fixing it myself.

That is what the technicians do at the shop.

So there is no way to guess how much money it could really cost.

The only time you'll really see all of the damage is when you actually look at it. Until then, everything looks like a big problem that needs replacing. It's just not possible to tell what's going on before you check it out.
