The latest Doom Eternal patch introduces Denuvo's updated Anti-Cheat system.
I purchased Doom Eternal roughly a month ago after enjoying DOOM 2016, expecting a similar experience. Although I haven’t even started playing yet, I noticed today they released an 'Update 1' patch that introduces Denuvo’s updated anti-cheat system to safeguard the multiplayer mode. You can find more details here: https://store.steampowered.com/newshub/a...5152148469 and here: https://blog.irdeto.com/2020/05/14/denuv...nd-gamers/.
Reviews have been largely favorable since the game’s release, but many users are complaining about crashes, performance issues, and security worries linked to the new software. While Denuvo AC isn’t inherently harmful, allowing kernel-level access seems excessive for a game centered on solo play. It appears the system only activates it during multiplayer sessions, yet it still forces installation at launch, affecting single-player too. Removing it just triggers reinstallation on future launches.
I’m concerned this trend might continue, with more single-player titles suffering due to restrictive anti-cheat measures. I also hope the developers revert these changes and ensure single-player options remain unaffected without requiring third-party software.
Performance was solid with no crashes. The game had some shortcomings though. It wasn't a great experience overall, but it wasn't terrible either. The platforming was decent at 95%, but the arena fights and design felt uninspired. The boss battles were repetitive. Compared to 2016, this one fell short.
I participated in the Release Week. Haven't interacted with it since then.
