Yesterday my computer only functions when connected to a power source. It shows 50% availability but isn’t charging and remains stuck at half capacity. Should I consider swapping out the battery? The device is over four years old. How long can it operate with a non-functional battery while drawing power from the mains? Is it advisable to remove the battery entirely if it’s dead? Please advise.

It's a good idea to upgrade to a new battery if you intend to keep using the laptop. However, if you're considering replacing it, this gives you a reason to proceed.
Some laptops won't function properly without a battery. Test your device to check if it needs one. If it does, removing the old battery can reduce its weight and prevent potential issues with a deteriorating battery.

Thank you for your response. I plan to check the price of a new battery and consider its remaining lifespan since it's more than four years old. Is five years typically considered the standard lifespan?

It seems the outcome depends on how frequently you use and misuse it. I own a Thinkpad I purchased in 2013. The only change I made was swapping the HDD for an SSD. It runs slowly because it's from the Intel third generation, but it still works fine.

The laptop now shows 48% available, which means it's reduced by 2%. It seems this level will reach 0% eventually. If it remains at 0%, will it still function when plugged in? If not, I’ll need a replacement battery. Thanks.
