The laptop shuts down abruptly, seemingly due to a power loss.
Hello, I recently purchased a new computer. It has generally functioned well, but it occasionally shuts down unexpectedly. It doesn’t crash or display a blue screen; instead, it seems like the power is simply cut off. The machine goes dark abruptly and then restarts on its own. When checking crash logs, there are none. It operates normally until it suddenly powers down. There are some startup errors, mainly due to filesystem problems linked to improper shutdown procedures. What’s clear is that these shutdowns occur randomly. I’ve performed several stress tests and benchmarks without issues. Occasionally it shuts down during heavy usage—like when browsing the web or idling—but mostly it restarts after light tasks. I started the computer, opened my browser, Discord, Telegram, left the room to grab a drink, and returned to find it had rebooted. These shutdowns now happen every few days.
When I first assembled the system, I used an 850W power supply. Those shutdowns were much more frequent. A friend suggested installing a UPS for better protection against unstable wall power, but that didn’t help. After upgrading to a 1200W PSU, it improved somewhat, though shutdowns still occur occasionally. I live in Berlin, Germany, and haven’t experienced any major power problems. My apartment’s circuitry should be sufficient.
A small observation: the PSU makes a clicking sound when it restarts. That’s unusual, but both my 850W and 1200W models did that. Apart from the PSU change, I replaced the cables twice, tried running it with a UPS, and updated the motherboard firmware. Temperatures are normal, and the random shutdowns don’t seem connected to them.
Here are my current specs:
- Power supply: Pure Power 12 M 1200 W (originally 850W)
- Processor: AMD Ryzen 9 7950X
- Graphics: ZOTAC GeForce RTX 3090 Trinity OC
- RAM: Dark Rock Pro 4, Samsung 980 PRO NVMe M.2, 2 TB
- SSD: MSI MPG B650 Tomahawk WiFi
- Motherboard: Corsair VENGEANCE DDR5, 64GB (2x32GB) at 6000MHz
- Operating system: Ubuntu 23.04
Honestly, I’m running out of ideas. The machine works but can be unsettling when you know it might cut out at any moment—especially during important work. Still, thanks for the guidance!
I experienced similar problems before and changed the cable, but it didn't fix the issue. The connection would intermittently drop power, making it hard to get it working consistently. I should have double-checked all internal cables and possibly reinserted everything carefully—like RAM and GPU—to see if that helps.
Are you referring to the 240V power cable going to the PSU or the internal wiring? The connections have been exchanged before. Initially, I used my old angled power cord, then changed it to the one that came with the PSU. After that, I rewired all the cables and repositioned most parts. Once I received my new PSU, I replaced every cable with the one provided for that unit.
