I own a Lenovo Ideapad 720-15 equipped with an i5-8250U, 12GB RAM (4GB+8GB) and AMD RX550, running Windows 10. The system is current, and GPU drivers are up to date. Previously, it would freeze when I fell asleep, and the issue worsened over time. The display would turn black, fans would increase to maximum after a few seconds, and it remained stuck in that state until I performed a hard reset via the power button or it rebooted itself and entered the user selection screen. Occasionally it would freeze when I tried to wake it up, though that was less common. I’ve noticed some symptoms but can’t pinpoint the cause. Sometimes it functions normally for about a week—starting it 2–4 times daily—and then crashes twice in a row. I increased the free space on both SSDs to over 10GB, but it didn’t help. The number of cards and videos opened in the web browser doesn’t seem to affect it, even when the browser is off or after a reboot while still on the user selection screen before logging in. I raised the RAM from 8GB (4+4) to 12GB (4+8), but it didn’t change. I’m unsure what might be triggering this issue, and it’s frustrating because I often use it with my TV to wake it up using a wireless keyboard. If I turn it off or hibernate, I have to open it and press the power button. When it freezes, I must force shut it or restart by holding the power button. Are there any system logs that could provide more information?
Because it's a Lenovo device, you can utilize Lenovo Vantage to check any system updates (like chipset or BIOS) and access its troubleshooters. You can also launch Event Viewer and search the system logs for any unusual activity. This should clarify things.
I set up Lenovo Vantage, applied the BIOS update, completed all available updates, and ran a system check. It didn’t resolve the issue. The laptop crashed again yesterday while I was sleeping and it rebooted itself. In the event viewer, there’s a critical message indicating the system wasn’t closed properly. The error from Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165 says the network card returned an incorrect driver value. BugCheck reported operation result: 0x00000124. I found a dump file attached to this post.
