That's just one choice, but handling Chinese suppliers and sending the board back to China would be something I'd prefer to skip if possible.

I notice that as well. The main idea seems to be the CPU is either faulty or not compatible. This was mentioned in two listings with "Main chipset:Intel? 6/7 Series." If it's a 6 series chipset, it won't function. The best way to confirm is by checking the heat spreader of the chipset.
