The issue with your Steam Deck display needs attention.
Hello friends, how are you? I recently purchased my 256GB model Steam Deck in November, and everything worked smoothly until today when the screen became completely distorted. It was still in its packaging when I picked it up, but when I tried to play it, the display showed a garbled image. The issue started after formatting the device and removing the SD card, along with entering the UEFI via volume and power buttons. All screens were affected, though the touchscreen and controls functioned normally. There was no problem connecting it to a monitor through the USB-C port.
I’m from Brazil and had to buy the deck from someone who traveled to the US on Facebook Marketplace. The return process is extremely difficult, especially since RMA support is limited. Honestly, this costs more than my monthly salary, and I had to save up after learning about it. I’d be grateful if anyone could offer advice on how to proceed, where to find replacement parts, or what might be causing the problem.
I have some experience with laptop and phone components, but I’m not skilled in soldering. If possible, I can replace the screen or motherboard if needed. Any guidance would mean a lot to me.
Well... The issue actually stopped by itself but now there is a black bar on the left side. When it was flickering it didn't look like there was any button stuck because I could barely read the text and navigate trough the deck without issues but it was all flickering. Also when plugged to any external display it was totally fine. But i'll check anyway. Its honestly a bummer but if the screen stay that way im okay. Better than a lost deck in my book. I didn't do nothing, just left the deck on the desk while I was writing this topic.
Technically, if the screen is just broken and you're not very familiar with the subject, you can place an order for a replacement screen to fix it.
I started by opening the deck and using the instructions to swap out the screen, but only changed the cable to test. It didn’t work. I then located a replacement screen on AliExpress at a reasonable price and purchased it. It’s likely not the original, but it’s a better option than what I had.
I still assist those facing similar challenges. The new screen I purchased arrived in good condition, yet the Steam Deck resolved itself. After the incident, the display never deteriorated further, and now the only noticeable change is a faint side shadow. I didn’t replace it because the issue mostly disappeared. I’ll keep it and let others know if anything changes. I didn’t attempt any fixes, even after reseating cables, which resolved the problem on its own. Just leave it on the side; when powered on the next day, the shadow faded and became less visible each day. My advice for others is to turn it off, charge it fully, and store it in a bag for a few days. It may seem unusual, but that worked for me so far.
In my situation I still think the display might be the issue. It occurs suddenly, my deck was turned off and then it started working again (see your video). But the same pattern repeated for about three days. I used it whenever possible; sometimes it stabilized, other times it got worse. Then I left it overnight and the next day it seemed almost fixed. The only thing that stands out is that reducing the backlight improved things, while increasing it made them worse. The problem didn’t disappear completely, but now it feels manageable. That bar on the left got noticeably darker than the rest; sometimes it’s more obvious, other times less so. It’s far from the original condition and doesn’t affect my gameplay at all. I kept it as it was. I purchased a replacement screen from Aliexpress that I discovered, but since swapping screens is tricky, I’ll only do it if the issue returns and the screen stops working. If you live in an area where returns are possible, I’d suggest waiting a couple of days, turning it on occasionally, keeping it charged with the original charger if you can, and trying to play games if things improve. To be honest, I didn’t find any link between skipping use, playing, heavy or light games—it just vanished like it started. Opening and reseating the cables didn’t help, and even a factory reset seemed unlikely. If you’re considering a replacement, try getting one from iFixit—they ship here, include a replacement guide, and the model matches yours. The screen I bought on Aliexpress was bare, possibly counterfeit, and while it worked, it might not be genuine.
I shared some updates. Last weekend my display screen began having problems again, almost making it unusable. After purchasing an extra model, I disassembled the deck and tested it outside—it worked. So the issue was always with the screen. Since I couldn't get repairs or return options for my deck, I bought replacement tools to fix it myself. Alongside the new screen, I gathered: a screwdriver for disassembly, a heat gun, a suction cup, a pick, adhesive, and some glue. I chose T-7000 liquid glue, which is common for phone screens. I also used rubber bands, a plastic spudger, a tablet for guidance, a light source, a phone to capture photos, and a 3D print jig from Thingiverse. A few safety items like anti-static wristband and magnetic screw holder were added. This was my first time replacing a glued screen. The process took about three hours. I followed iFixit instructions closely but removed only non-essential parts—trackpads and triggers—to avoid heat damage. The battery stayed attached. After reassembly, I tested the deck with the new screen, powered it on without it, and waited 48 hours before finishing. It worked perfectly! The repair cost was roughly $110–$120 (excluding labor). Screen came from AliExpress. If RMA isn’t an option, I recommend sending your deck for replacement, as this could affect other components like the flex cable or motherboard. This fix was due to a manufacturer defect. This method is similar to tablet or phone repairs and might be simpler than doing it yourself. Here are some photos from the process.
