It's not just about the GPU. The CPU might be overheating too. I suspect many laptops have insufficient cooling systems overall. It's possible it could be burning up while you use it. Thermal throttling definitely happens with some models.

Certainly, but this shouldn't really disrupt the game; it should limit performance to its minimum possible level

I've experienced laptops that seem to shut down due to heat problems, which I'd describe as a crash. However, the real question is: Is the laptop failing or is the game causing the issue while the machine still works? @jackson67 If overheating is the cause, consider reapplying thermal paste, cleaning cooling parts for dust and hair, and possibly adjusting voltage on overheating components. But it could be something else entirely.

My GPU temps sit between 80 and 90, sometimes hitting 90 too. Games keep freezing after about 10 minutes, but when I lowered the GPU clock, I could play GTA 5 for an hour without issues. Now it crashes again with the ERR_GFX_D3D_INIT error.
