I tried some Linux distributions on my old laptop. It has two drives—a 128GB SSD for C and a 1TB HDD for D. I restarted Windows because it was full of junk files. After downloading Elementary OS, I used the trial option for a while before installing. I created a 40GB partition on the C drive to install it. After about three hours of using Elementary OS, I wanted to switch back to Windows, but when I tried to boot, it said Windows was attempting an auto-repair. After a couple minutes, it told me the repair wouldn’t work. I chose to shut down and then tried booting again, but the same issue appeared. How can I resolve this? My laptop is an Inspiron 7720.

You start the process by accessing the BIOS/UEFI setup, then enter the GRUB menu to load the Windows installation.

You created a fresh partition on the drive, and Windows was set up without reducing the existing Windows partition. If this happened, your original Windows installation is lost. You’ll need to begin anew and configure your partitions properly before installing Windows again, or at least shrink the Windows partition first before adding a new one.
