Hi there! Your husband is experiencing some unusual CPU temperature spikes on his i9 9900k, even when idle. He’s been using FL Studio and has been working on his PC regularly for over two years. Recently, he installed an M.2 SSD, but that doesn’t seem to be the issue. I’m not sure if replacing the thermal paste would help, but I’d like some guidance. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The 9900K CPU was released about five years ago, so if it was made then... the paste should be reapplied. My 9900K is running well, even though the paste is three years old, and I plan to do it soon. Is it using an air cooler or an AIO?

It seems like the product is from the Be Quiet brand. He requires cooling, yet also needs silence for the sound and music effects.

I wouldn't take it too far. Perhaps only certain items are marked. Clearly we check temperatures regularly, but for those who don’t… I’d inspect the paste every few years. However, since checking the paste involves taking the cooler out, it might be better to reapply or set up alerts when performance drops, like the OP mentioned.

It might seem surprising, but this could be the reason. The M.2 SSD won't greatly affect cooling performance, yet relocating the computer can slightly shift the cooler away from the CPU. Adding aged thermal paste could also be the cause. Wishing you a great day!

Thanks in advance! I plan to visit an electronics shop tomorrow to buy some new thermal paste and replace it.

Updated: CPU and cooler were refreshed, new thermal paste Artic MX-6 applied. Performance held up until exporting a track in FL Studio. Most cores reached temperatures up to 112°C or more. Possibly a cooler upgrade is needed. I’m still unsure. He’s had the machine long enough without these issues before. Any advice?
