I own a few older titles like certain FPS and third-person games that lack a HUD with an option to turn it on. It’s puzzling why this pattern developed. Given how helpful a HUD can be—such as monitoring health, remaining ammunition, active weapons, or items—I wonder if this trend has finally faded.
Many players prefer not using a HUD because it can make the experience feel more authentic and engaging. While a traditional game HUD offers helpful data, it also mimics information you wouldn’t encounter in real life. I don’t believe there’s much value in complaining about something optional that isn’t essential.
What titles? I’m eager to try them…! These ultra-rare games let you disable the display, even rarer ones skip it altogether. As for the lack of a display, it’s all about *immersion*—only makes sense for well-known experiences or those built around it. A display could be distracting, while removing it adds more challenge and depth. And I might mention more realistic settings; real life doesn’t have hUDs or progress bars…
I own several older titles that lack a HUD entirely. One is from the Metro series and another is inspired by "The Lord of the Rings."
The Fatal Frame Spoiler offers no on-screen feedback except a "wetness indicator" that mostly shows rain and flooded areas, though it vanishes when you're dry—a nice detail. The game still includes a HUD, but it only appears while using the camera obscura, which serves as its sole weapon. This adds to the suspense the game already provides (my friend says it's too scary), making you worry about your remaining health before each tough encounter. It's not a major issue since dying is uncommon and health items are rarely needed. Considering there can be long save points without saving, it's hard to die unnecessarily—especially since health items are easy to find. Hmm, it seems pretty rare for a game to skip HUDs entirely… it's just the standard approach, and a simpler way would be to display health or status directly, which would require more animation work and resources. No one has time for that when developers are stretched thin, especially with limited talent and budget… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Metro aims to minimize on-screen information since most details are already available elsewhere. Artyom uses a watch that monitors his gas mask filter lifespan and shows visibility warnings. Many weapons display bullet counts instantly, eliminating the need for separate ammo counters. The lack of a traditional HUD isn't due to absence, but rather a natural integration into the game environment.
I didn’t go all in on the metro ride. My reaction speed hasn’t been the same. I don’t really enjoy fast-paced shooters.
