He’s experiencing problems when using HDMI to Ethernet converters, especially after connecting a CAT 7. They’re labeled as CAT 5e/6, but it seems those standards didn’t exist when they were purchased. He mentioned not finding any information online about a CAT 6 device working with a CAT 7. Is compatibility possible? Or is the issue likely due to cable quality, interference, or other factors over the long distance?

No real distinction exists between their compatibility. The higher the classification, the superior the cable quality—at least in theory. It essentially refers to improved insulation, thicker wires, or enhanced shielding. Typically, CAT 7 cables feature a foil shield around each pair and an extra mesh shield around all of them. Visually, they all use the same four wire pairs. If the most affordable option functions, the pricier one should too. Possible reasons for issues with a CAT 7 cable could be that it's not an authentic CAT 7 or it might be faulty. Sometimes manufacturers label CAT5 or CAT6 cables as CAT7 even though they aren't rated for it. Edit: Length shouldn’t be a major concern at 120 feet, though it shouldn’t be dismissed entirely—it really depends on the converters and isn’t the cable’s main limitation, especially since CAT5 and 6 appear to work well. Ethernet generally performs up to 100 meters (about 328 feet). Cat5e supports 1Gbit over 100m, while Cat6a and Cat7 handle 10Gbit at 100m. Cat7 can reach up to 40Gbit beyond 10 meters or so.

No, it does not affect all Cat7 cables.

The cable runs directly between the transmitter and receiver without any middle devices. It’s a basic extender setup. Yes, a standard network connection can be established over this path.

Several HDMI to Ethernet adapters have defined size constraints. I recall a few from Monoprice that were limited to 65 feet. Search for the model number and check its specifications.

The issue hasn't been an issue before, even with extended distances. We only have one CAT 7 cable here, not multiple. I don’t know the cost, but it’s not a standard price and the shielding looks poor, so it probably isn’t fake. I’ll follow up. No devices or extenders in between. These seem to be Monoprice products. The ends have been altered several times, even the types changed. I’m looking into this now and will share an update tomorrow. Based on these suggestions, it might be a defective cable. Thanks for the help!
