I’m just starting out with PC building. My setup runs Windows 10 64-bit and everything seems to work smoothly—drivers, Steam, updates, etc. But when I connect my HDMI or DisplayPort via the graphics card, strange things happen. The computer and GPU kick on, the keyboard and mouse work fine, yet the screen goes dark. If I enter my PIN as if I could actually see the display, it turns on and takes me to my desktop, but then my keyboard and mouse freeze completely, stuck on the desktop. The screen still shows everything, though. All the peripherals are powered, and the desktop appears correctly. However, pressing Alt+Tab briefly highlights a window on the taskbar. My hardware specs are: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D (4.7GHz, 8 cores), Thermalright PELLIX Assassin 120 SE, 66.17 CFM cooler, Gigabyte X870 Eagle WiFi ATX AM5 motherboard. I know the Wi-Fi won’t work with Windows 10. I’ve tried reconnecting power cables, plugging the GPU into a different PCIe slot, forcing BIOS to use PCIe 4.0, swapping display cables, double-checking the card placement, reinstalling drivers, and even forgotten tweaks. Since I don’t have another PC or graphics card for testing, I’m unsure if the issue lies with the card itself or the rest of the system.
Check the BIOS settings and verify the USB ports configuration. Ensure they’re not enabled for power-saving mode. Disable that option for USB ports.
It appears the application only displays a brief icon on the taskbar, making it seem like it's the main window.
I haven’t seen anything about USB ports linked to power saving. Could you tell me where you’re looking for this information? All I have right now is this screen.
One of my PCs faced USB issues. The Device Manager flagged a USB hub. Updating MB chipset drivers fixed it. Are your graphics cards turned off in the BIOS? It seems like the monitor is behaving as if it were a secondary display, not the main one. Do you have multiple monitors? Is your graphics card disabled in the BIOS settings?
I’ve tested various USBs and even reconnected my USB hubs. Until someone else pointed it out, I hadn’t considered it. I also tried turning off integrated graphics—though I didn’t mention that before. And no, that’s the only monitor I use; I now know I have one too, so let me check it out.
Wow, that worked! I can see the lock screen now and it seems to be moving around my desktop. Thanks a lot—I didn’t realize the USB ports were the problem. I was really surprised I’d spent $1300 on that. Appreciate your help!
