You recently purchased a new PC and installed the Calisto Protocol from the Xbox store. During testing, your RX 7800 XT emitted an unusual noise during high load, which seemed like fans scraping but was only noticeable when the card was under stress. The system specs show it runs Windows 11 with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D processor, Corsair RM750e power supply, and a 32GB DDR5 RAM setup on a 1TB SSD.

Linus will show you how to handle coil whine on recent cards—your 7900 XT works just fine.

It seems like the noise is coming from the internal coils in the graphics card's chokes. If it's quite loud, consider requesting a return or replacement.

It's not uncommon for a brand new GPU to experience random issues, especially if it was exposed to unexpected conditions during setup or use. Such problems can sometimes be triggered by specific games or environmental factors.

You're asking about what the term means once it's applied. It occurs during loading and varies with different loads. For instance, in the menu it shows a single option, but in the game it changes due to the clock speed altering.

It's unusual for this to occur, especially under heavy use. The coil whine began after attempting The Calisto Protocol. I'm curious if the game had an effect or if it was just a coincidence.

Different games utilize various graphics engines, which affect how much stress they place on the GPU. Some can run smoothly at full capacity while the card remains cool, whereas others may cause significant heat. Coil whine is typical for new cards and usually decreases over time as they stabilize.
