The GPU is making a buzzing sound.
Hello. I found a used RX 6800 XT from Gigabyte Gaming and heard this unusual sound while running a Shadow of the Tomb Raider test. It’s quite loud, but when idle it’s less noticeable and quieter. I compared it to my previous GPU, the RTX 2060, which makes a much softer noise and doesn’t have that “scratching” sound. My PSU is a TX750M. Is this constant noise typical due to power consumption? And what about the scratching sound?
Coilwhine appears on both cards. It’s harmless and won’t shorten their life; it’s just electricity moving through the coils and making a humming sound. Typically linked to frame rate—more FPS means more noise. As described, it poses no risk. Power supplies, graphics cards, motherboards, and monitors can all exhibit coilwhine.
This video was made a decade ago and CoilWhine used to be more compatible with FPS, particularly on that specific AMD card. Your system runs smoothly even without games? The scratching noise you hear is coilwhine, which can vary in frequency. Neither the card nor the issue is problematic—just a minor annoyance.
It functions similarly to a clock, with each second producing the "scratching" noise, though it's much softer. Appreciate your assistance!
It seems unusual but might relate to how Windows desktop compositing functions. Perhaps a particular GPU operation happens every second? Anything that increases the GPU workload could activate it. Ultimately, coil whine usually occurs when the power draw from the card suddenly jumps, producing audible pulses from its switching frequency.
