When I bought Total War: Warhammer 3 (after it had mostly been repaired), I observed that switching tabs out of the game and coming back would freeze the game to a single frame. Pressing Esc would play the main menu sound, but the screen wouldn’t update. The only solution was to switch tabs and then return, though this wasn’t always reliable and sometimes the game would just crash.

I believed this issue was specific to TW:WH3 until I played Hearts of Iron 4, which also froze after switching tabs. I didn’t experience a CTD, but it consistently froze after an alt-tab. So far, this seems to be limited to strategy games.

Then it occurred in Terraria across all titles. That game doesn’t crash either, but it still freezes for one frame.

I’m not sure what’s causing this. I think it’s probably unrelated to my Nvidia hardware, as the problem has persisted for a long time. I’ve completely uninstalled and reinstalled my GPU drivers several times using DDU over the past six months or more. I don’t use GeForce Experience and only use MSI Afterburner for custom fan curves to avoid annoying fan noises.

I'm not sure if I should remove the thread or keep it, but I found the problem. It was Nvidia's "Fast" v-sync option. After turning it off, everything stopped crashing. I don't understand why this setting had such a big effect, but after disabling it, things improved a lot.
