I've seen a pattern—most resident evil titles are available for sale on Steam. I really enjoyed the original 4 on the PS2, but I didn’t revisit it when the sequel came out. Now I’m stuck choosing between the 5 or the 6... Got any idea what you're thinking?
Both options are poor, yet RE5 stands out as the superior choice.
Certainly, I can suggest a few more options released after version 4. Let me know if you'd like some recommendations!
After Resident Evil 4 things have taken a turn for the worse. It has lost its chilling edge and now feels more like a typical shooter. The remastered versions of Resident Evil are still solid though. (Info on the original titles) Steam offers RE4, 5, and 6 together for £13.01. Check out some reviews for deeper understanding. In my opinion, the only solid Resident Evil games are the originals—Resident Evil (PC remaster available) and Resident Evil 2, 3: Nemesis, and 0 (remaster on PC).
I share what @MograineLefay said—once the focus shifted away from zombies, the series declined. Resident Evil was once my top choice, and I own multiple copies of all its titles, which feels a bit bittersweet (I still have a PS2 for Outbreak even though the servers shut down long ago). After RE4, I mostly buy games during sales or on Humble Bundle, not playing them much anymore, but I remain a supporter of Capcom in hopes they continue making the animated films I still like.
The sole advantage for Resident Evil 4 is Leon S Kennedy as the main character. Earlier Resident Evil games, with their simpler control schemes and limited ammunition, made gameplay more enjoyable. You couldn<|pad|> to adjust character speed with bullets when ammo was scarce. Modern titles feel overly polished and cinematic, often prioritizing spectacle over challenge. Resident Evil 2 and 3 still stand out among my top picks.
It's worth noting that 5-6 aren't entirely terrible. While I don't fully agree they're bad, Revelations 1&2 are really solid games. The rev2 version could improve its mechanics, possibly making it more enjoyable on the console—though I think developers sometimes lose their edge, especially after rev1's strong launch.
