TERA messed up every other MMO for me. I hate tab-targeting, and most action games don’t handle it as smoothly as TERA does. Or you could just give up and quit after 50 hours, then come back a couple months later. After two years, I ended up with 1116 hours in Dota 2.

The impact varies by style. Fighting games face major setbacks after Super Smash Bros. Melee arrived. Classic competitors struggle in this new landscape, and the Smash series significantly weakened competitive play. Shooter titles have suffered due to games like CoD, Battlefield, Titanfall, and similar titles that prioritize online over solo gameplay. Without Far Cry 3 and Deus Ex: HR, I’d have given up on the genre entirely. Massively multiplayer online experiences have been overshadowed by these developments. Building simulations were damaged by SimCity 5 for being a major failure.

MMO history generally started with strong community values around two decades ago. Life felt genuine, filled with shared laughter and conversation in virtual spaces. Other games faded into memory as repetitive and shallow. The introduction of quest systems shifted focus to microtransactions, time-limited events, and pay-to-win models. The dream faded, leaving only emptiness. Now sandbox experiences like Minecraft, Killing Floor, and Terraria offer a fresh start—could this be the beginning of something better?

For the last couple of years I've been enjoying Natural Selection 2, racking up over 1150 hours. The experience still gives me that thrilling adrenaline rush every time I log in. You can choose to be a marine or an alien. It's built around a command system where you manage resources and direct your forces as if running an RTS. The main goal is to dismantle the opposing teams' key bases—whether it's commanding a squad chair for Marines or controlling the hive for aliens. Each area functions like a steam nozzle that you must seize to secure resources and boost your power. The maps are expansive, covering large-scale battlefields with space ships and unique locales. Success depends heavily on teamwork, making it a challenging yet rewarding challenge. Many players compare it to Dota, where the stakes are high and the excitement intense. Most who play find it incredibly engaging, often spending long hours perfecting their strategy. This game has become a staple on my PC, even more so than the original Half-Life mod that inspired it. It was crafted by a passionate community over ten years, not for mass appeal but for dedicated fans. I'm excited to keep playing it for another couple of years.
