I chose to try the game for a free 14-day trial. Who knows how Square Enix handles their systems? Email isn’t working and the nickname won’t do. Could a one-time password be needed? If so, what does it involve?

Your SE ID serves as your username for the SE account. A one-time password isn't required unless you've chosen it. If you haven't activated it, just leave the field blank during login. The same details are used for both SE and FFXIV access. Did you attempt to log in before the trial began? Which error message appeared?
