I mainly play Apex Legends and Rocket League, these titles are really laggy, making it hard to enjoy. I built my own PC, though I’m not sure if the hardware is the issue—I’ll list the specs below. It seems the problem might be related to the network. Some friends have changed the router or other settings, but nothing seems to fix it. I used to have smooth performance about six months ago, but now it’s acting up. Any advice would be great.

If the lagging occurs then examine system performance with (initially) Task Manager and Resource Monitor.
Use each tool individually but only one at a time.
Show the tool window and let the system run for a while until it stabilizes.
Open one game as usual and play normally, keeping the tool window open.
Observe any changes in performance when the game experiences lag.
Gaining insight will require some trial and effort.
The goal is to identify which system resources are being consumed, how much they are used, and which resource is affected when the system slows down.
Or perhaps something that begins running or halts.

What network connection are you employing?

I'm connecting via Ethernet into a Wi-Fi pod, but previously using Ethernet directly to the router caused high latency and packet loss.

Offline games are functioning properly, so the problem might be related to the network connection, but I'm unsure about the next steps.

verify the connection details with your ISP, preferably using Ethernet during testing
ensure the router's firmware and your network driver are current
confirm whether your firewall allows necessary traffic

Basic test to identify the problem area.
First, ensure you check connectivity via Ethernet to your router; otherwise, results may be affected by Wi-Fi interference along the path.
Run two CMD windows: keep a steady ping to your router's IP and a standard address like 8.8.8.8.
You should notice no problems with the router itself, but if there are issues only with the 8.8.8.8 connection, it likely points to a problem with the home network link.
Significant spikes in latency or packet loss could indicate the real issue, while packet loss is something the ISP typically handles.
