Claimed to appear in PCI-SIG documentation. Several upcoming Ice Lake CPUs may adopt PCIe 4.0 soon. Mobile chips launched about a year ago lacked this feature. Mainstream desktop Ice Lake releases seem unlikely at this stage. Server-based Ice Lake processors appear most probable for this advancement. This could help Intel catch up with Epyc. A mobile refresh remains possible but seems improbable due to limited benefits and better integration into the next generation.

I'll trust what I see elsewhere rather than a random Twitter post. It doesn't seem too far-fetched, but switching it would require a whole new chip lineup. Considering Intel has stayed largely consistent over the past five years, it's hard to say for sure.

11th generation Rocket Lake is likely to support PCI-E 4.0, which explains why most Z490 boards use 4.0 switches. It's possible an Ice Lake update will include this feature, though it seems less relevant for mobile applications right now.

The rumour there is that Comet Lake's successor, Rocket Lake, will support PCIe 4.0, so mobo support needs to be built in now. But neither of those are Ice Lake. It is wise to treat any rumour with caution, and I did try to poke around the PCI-SIG site myself to see if I can find it, but I guess it's behind a paywall. Unlike more open SIGs like USB or Bluetooth. Ice Lake server is essentially a new CPU compared to Ice Lake mobile. For an earlier parallel, look at Skylake-SP and Skylake-X compared to the original desktop Skylake-S. While the execution cores themselves might be more or less unchanged in function, the blocks around it certainly were not left alone and we had the addition of AVX-512 units, and a totally different L3 cache structure. Further, Ice Lake is the first generally available CPU from them that is not Skylake derived. Using the Sunny Cove architecture, it bought with it a big boost in IPC compared to Skylake.

I understand, actually in recent years Intel has backed three CPU generations on a single socket. It’s likely the Z490 will reach end of life following Ice Lake based on current patterns.

Are you interpreting this correctly? On the Z490 platform (socket 1200), we’re currently using the newly released 10th generation CPUs called Comet Lake. The upcoming replacement, Rocket Lake, will arrive next year, bringing in another generation of processors. Ice Lake isn’t part of this timeline.

I no longer follow Intel's naming system anymore after the 10th gen Ice Lake series has become so repetitive with names like Tiger, Lake, Comet, and Ice. It feels confusing and frustrating.

I favor using architecture names since they give precise details. AMD performs just as poorly. I must mention Zen 2 when discussing modern CPUs, as Ryzen 3000 isn't a current option. Within this context, it was evident we were referring to typical desktop processors, so mobile models can be disregarded.
