Hi there, I received a used old PC and plan to turn it into a NAS server. When I power it on, the fans start up but nothing appears to boot; there are no lights on the motherboard to confirm functionality. My goal is simply to access the BIOS. I’m using the components I have on hand—a PSU, CPU cooler, and a single GPU slot. Here are the details: CPU – AMD FX 6300 (no built-in graphics), Cooler Master Hyper H412R board, ASRock 980DE3/U3S3 RAM, Kingston RAM (mismatched types), Radeon HD5450 GPU, generic 550W PSU.

I’ve tried several things so far without success: I’ve re-seated the RAM and booted only one stick at a time to check compatibility. Once I did that, the fans stopped spinning and only the case light lit. I cleaned the RAM connectors with isopropyl alcohol. I swapped in new RAM sticks, reset the CMOS by holding the power button for a minute, and even tried using a small speaker on the motherboard to listen for any beep codes—no sound came through. I also connected an HDD via OpenMediaVault and plugged in the Ethernet cable to test if the GPU was the problem. Unfortunately, I don’t have any spare GPUs to try.

I’m running out of ideas and really need someone with experience to help. This is my first time using an AMD board and CPU, even though I’m used to Intel chips. Could you assist?

I'm not sure about the graphics card's status, but I can check compatibility between the GPU and CPU. If you're unsure, consider testing another power supply as a possible next action.

Hi, thanks for reaching out. It seems like your setup might be a bit tricky right now. You mentioned not having a working GPU and no spare power supply. Let me see if I can help with alternatives or troubleshooting steps.
