I visited a friend's house where we both enjoy building PCs. Every couple of weeks we swap out our machines. One day I had the 1600, which is a top-tier chip that can be boosted to over 4.2Ghz. We tried to push my friend's 2600 CPU to 4Ghz using a modest voltage tweak (1.18 cores, 1.2 SoC). According to the readings from HWMonitor, the stock voltages were 1.2 cores and 1.3 SoC. I didn’t power it off—just turned it on and waited. After about five minutes we forced a shutdown, which only showed a black screen and no BIOS prompt. Then we reset the CMOS with the usual steps, and the BIOS asked if we wanted to restart. I agreed, and it restarted but still didn’t display anything. Later, we swapped his CPU into my machine, and it worked fine. We also tried different GPUs or removed the graphics card for booting, plus reset the CMOS and used just one RAM stick. Still nothing—no display, no start-up. We thought the motherboard might have overvolted the CPU right after the BIOS rebooted. Maybe that small adjustment wasn’t enough to damage it. I’m not sure what else happened, but I’m puzzled. Anyone know what went wrong?

We always keep the CPU and coolers inside; we only use the GPU. The motherboard has HDDs, and we clean those too. Afterward, we reassemble everything. Never remove the CPU.

Just removing cables, RAM, and similar components wears them out quickly. These parts are designed for plugging in at most 50 times. The issue that the CPU won’t work on all systems confirms it’s likely beyond repair. Plus, the B450 DS3H has one of the poorest power outputs among its models, suggesting a combination of factors led to this failure.

It seems the every other week might have been overstated, though it could have been significant. Our experience with the CPU and the motherboard has been similar about ten times in the past year. So, the idea that the motherboard is boosting the CPU performance isn't entirely incorrect. We're getting a new 3600 next day and a replacement motherboard (Asrock B550m Steel Legend) in roughly ten days. Is it safe to install the CPU in the old motherboard? The previous one worked well with my 1600.
