I adjusted the Ethernet speed in Device Manager and looked under "Speed and duplex." I found options up to 100Mbps full duplex, then 2.5Gbps full duplex. My router seems to support only up to 1Gbps. When I selected that higher speed, the Ethernet connection stopped working as expected. I’m wondering if there’s a way to enable the 1000Mbps or 1Gbps setting. It doesn’t seem like a hardware issue unless it’s related to my motherboard. Even then, why isn’t that option available? I have a Cat 6 cable and a 1Gbps plan with Xfinity. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Are you using the original driver from the NIC supplier? Does the cable connect to the GB port? A few network devices make this claim, but only provide one of four ports to handle the full bandwidth.

You don’t need to modify anything in Auto Negotiate. Confirm the router supports Gigabit. If yes, test another cable briefly. Sometimes drivers cause hiccups, but starting with the fundamentals is wise.

Which motherboard are you using? It’s likely 100/1000/2500, and the auto-negotiation should have selected the fastest supported speed between both devices. Which router or switch does the computer connect to?

My device is an MSI B550 Gaming Edge Wi-Fi and it connects to an xFi Gateway using a 1Gbps internet plan.

I'm very confident the router supports Gigabit speeds. The cable is a Cat 6 model, but I can't switch it because it's the only option available right now.

I have all the latest drivers for the motherboard, including the newest BIOS updates. I’ll verify if the cable is properly connected to the GB port, but even with the same router port and Cat 6 cable, my laptop still achieves around 300Mbps wired. I’m curious whether the issue lies with the motherboard or the BIOS settings, especially since my audio ports aren’t functioning either.

You’re directly linked to the router? No middle equipment? If your laptop shows Gigabit, we can rule out issues with the Cat6 cable or the router. That 300Mbps reading suggests the laptop might be relying on Wi-Fi for the speed test. I’d retest without Wi-Fi enabled. There’s typically a BIOS setting for audio that’s always active unless you change it. It could mean a hardware issue with your motherboard, so consider resetting CMOS—though it probably won’t fix anything. There are some BIOS adjustments related to both functions, but they’d need intentional changes.

What version of your router's software do you have installed?

My current location is on the upper floor, while my router is deep in the basement. The signal stays strong throughout the house without any interruptions. On the laptop, the connection was previously unstable, but after another test I achieved about 400Mbps upload speed this time. I’ll open the BIOS to see if any audio or Ethernet settings have been changed or disabled.
